The combined range extension represents a significant and growing sales opportunity for Aftermarket customers. Designed especially for many of the best-selling models from manufacturers such as Honda, Volvo, Toyota, Land Rover and Audi, the new spark plugs are forecast to cover a car parc of more than 1.8 million 4-wheel vehicles by 2024 – representing an increase of 32% within the next two years (source: TecAlliance).
Ten of the introductions are double precious metal spark plugs that ensure the highest wear resistance. Additionally they provide outstanding ignitability by using fine centre electrodes. Three of these, all Laser Iridium types which follow the OE business of NGK SPARK PLUG, are being pioneered to the Aftermarket: reference SILKR7H8 fits Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1.5 applications from October 2017; SILKGR9A7EG serves several Porsche Boxter and Cayman 2.5 engines from April 2016; and ILNFR7A7G is the ideal replacement for Opel/Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 models from April 2020.
One of the new Laser Iridium spark plugs alone, ILZKAR8J8SY, accounts for an exceptional number of recent Volvo and Honda applications, including Volvo’s top-selling XC60 2.0 (both petrol and plug-in hybrid) and the Honda CR-V 1.5 VTEC. Reference SILZKAR8G7Y is another major introduction, covering popular Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Evoque and Range Rover models from March 2017 onwards. Additionally, Laser Iridium spark plugs DILKAR7B8, DILKAR8J9G and ILZKAR7E11S fit a number of Subaru, Toyota and Honda applications; while Laser Platinum spark plugs LTR6BP13 and PFR7S11EG provide ignition for Ford and Audi models.
Frank Massia, Director Marketing Aftermarket EMEA, NGK SPARK PLUG EUROPE GmbH confirmed: “It is NGK SPARK PLUG’s continued goal to deliver the optimum, high performance spark plug for every vehicle on the road. These 12, important new parts represent additional, fast-growing sales potential for our Aftermarket customers, along with the cutting edge quality for which our company is renowned.”
In terms of technology, NGK SPARK PLUG’s double precious metal Laser Iridium spark plugs feature a laser-welded iridium alloy on the centre electrode with a platinum chip on the ground electrode, for optimal performance and lifetime. Its Laser Platinum range places platinum plates on the centre and ground electrodes, guaranteeing consistent ignition output across the spark plug’s service life. The company’s Iridium IX spark plugs, designed with an iridium alloy on the extremely thin centre electrode, offer an ignitability upgrade over standard nickel types.
All of the introductions will be listed in TecDoc from 20 April 2022. They will also all be included in the company’s next 4-wheel spark plug catalogue.
