Glow plug laying on its yellow box
Niterra, a global supplier of OE-quality ignition products, has integrated advanced sensor technology into the latest glow plug to join its aftermarket line-up. The technology is designed to enhance vehicle performance and help diesel engines meet stringent new EURO 7 emissions standards, enabling it to cover a wide range of Volkswagen Group models.

This adaptable reference (Y1078PS) is a pressure sensor glow plug (PSG) with an integrated piezo sensor built directly into the glow plug element. The sensor measures the exact combustion pressure in the cylinder in real time and provides data with a high level of precision. By transforming the glow plug from a simple heating element into a high-precision hybrid component, NGK Ignition Parts enables active combustion management that offers a host of improvements over older technologies. The component is controlled via pulse width modulation (PWM), which means the PSG’s glow profile dynamically adjusts to the engine’s operating conditions, such as engine speed, fuel injection volume and boost pressure. The PSG’s integrated sensor unit monitors cylinder pressure and relays this information to the engine control unit (ECU) in less than 50 milliseconds. The ECU then uses this data to control the length and timing of fuel injection to optimise engine performance, improve engine acoustics and minimise the impact of the quality of diesel used. This ‘closed-loop’ feedback process offers significant technological and economic advantages.

Commenting on the significance of this advancement, Michael Liam Gibbs, Head of Category Management Aftermarket Marketing EMEA, Niterra EMEA GmbH, states:

"NGK Ignition Parts leads the way with intelligently designed sensor technology that not only enables enhanced engine performance but is also a contributor to assisting emissions compliance. Our latest pressure sensor glow plug is a testament to our commitment to advancement, quality, and supporting our customers across the aftermarket."

The new PSG takes this technology to a new level by enabling reliable cold starts at temperatures as low as -40°C and by reaching operating temperatures of over 1,000°C in less than three seconds. On top of this, they are designed to last for 1 billion cycles, which is equivalent to the entire service life of a modern diesel engine. This durability provides an increased glow duration of up to 15 minutes per cycle, which ensures stable combustion during the critical warm-up phase of operation. Furthermore, the PSG works seamlessly with both 3.3-volt and 5-volt ECU systems and allows for uniform fitment to all of Volkswagen’s engine variants.

This attention to quality is evident across all NGK Ignition Parts glow plugs, which are carefully designed and engineered to support an efficient ignition process in diesel engines, ensuring consistent and dependable performance, even under cold conditions. They also help protect the regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) by raising exhaust temperatures.

This versatility ensures the new glow plug is a highly adaptable plug-and-play part that upholds the brand’s well-earned reputation for excellent durability and high build quality, while also extending coverage of Niterra’s wide aftermarket product range. It will cover a significant car parc of around 14 million vehicles in operation (VIO) in 2026, with this figure expected to increase by almost 5% in the next two years. The new glow plug is an ideal fit with the widest coverage of Volkswagen Group vehicles, including various Audi, Cupra, Skoda, Seat and VW models, including some commercial vehicles, built between 2007 and 2024 that use the group’s extremely popular range of Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engines.

The new PSG is already available for sale and stocked in Niterra’s European Regional Distribution Centre. The new reference will be listed in the TecDoc web catalogue from 27 May 2026 and included in the next PDF catalogue edition.
