Young NGK-sponsored star races to major title

Teenage Speedway rider Wilbur Hancock continues to make headlines as he bids to emulate the success of his four-time World champion father Greg.

The young star took the AMA Youth 250cc Speedway Long Track National Championship title after achieving a five-ride maximum at the meeting in the USA.

The 14-year-old is backed by ignition specialist NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd which has a long-standing relationship with Greg.

Wilbur, who first took to the track aged just seven, raced to the title at the Perris Raceway in California, USA.

He has been sponsored by NGK since 2017, saying at the time: “I couldn’t believe it when Dad said NGK were keen to sponsor me. I thought ‘is this really happening?’ I love everything about Speedway, going sideways, the speed and the sound. It’s great.”

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “Winning the title is a great achievement for Wilbur. We have had a long and successful relationship with Greg over many years and he is a great ambassador for the sport and to see Wilbur continuing the family tradition is fantastic. I’m sure he will have a lot more success in the future.”
