Ivanov retains World Ice Speedway title

NGK-sponsored Daniil Ivanov has retained the FIM Ice Speedway World Championship following the premature ending of the 2020 competition because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.

Finals nine and ten of this year’s championship, due to be held in Heerenveen, The Netherlands on April 4 & 5 have been cancelled following action by the Dutch government to restrict sporting and other events.

An early decision was taken to  allow riders, officials and others involved from around Europe and Russia to return home and to allow spectators to cancel their travel plans.

Following the cancellation of finals seven and eight in Inzell this brings the 2020 FIM Ice Speedway Championship to a premature end as alternative dates for both events cannot be found during the current uncertainty.

As a result, FIM have declared the championship completed as at the end of final six with four-time World champion Daniil Ivanov named 2020 world champion.

FIM President Jorge Viegas said: “Unfortunately, and due to the particular conditions of this discipline we could not reschedule the remaining finals. Congratulations to Daniil Ivanov and we hope things get back to normal as soon as possible.”

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd is a long-standing supporter of Speedway on shale and also sponsors Ivanov in Ice Speedway which sees riders racing on 500cc motorcycles with spiked tyres and no brakes.

John Money, of NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “I am sure Daniil would have loved to have won the title on the track but it is still a tremendous achievement by him to retain his title and secure his fourth World championship.”
