NGK Spark Plug makes spark plugs from Mercedes-Benz OE available to the Aftermarket

slashes Press release from 10/21/2015

Ratingen, 21.10.2015 – The current four-cylinder engines from Mercedes-Benz exclusively feature spark plugs from NGK Spark Plug. The world’s leading spark plug producer is a longstanding development partner of the premium car manufacturer. Now, NGK has started supplying independent workshops with two additional spark plugs from Mercedes OE.

The high-performance spark plugs SILZKFR8D7S (NGK Stock No. 95875, Mercedes Part Nos. 0041596503, 0041596803, 0041597503 and 0041597203) and SILZKFR8E7S (NGK Stock No. 90654, Mercedes Part Nos. 0041597003 and 0041597903) come with many design features which safeguard maximum ignition reliability even in downsized engines that work with extreme ignition voltages. They were developed solely for the Mercedes-Benz engine families M133, M270 and M274. Currently, these power 30 models from the A, B, C, CLA and GLA Classes and, with that, a total of 272,000 vehicles in Europe.

Both are M12 spark plugs with cup-shaped terminal. Compared to a standard SAE connector, this space-saving construction allows for a longer design of the ceramic insulator – a measure which positively affects flashover resistance even at high ignition voltages. Additionally, NGK uses a new special ceramic which safeguards a high resistance to electrical breakdowns despite the thin insulator wall. To further improve the cold-starting characteristics of the SILZKFR8D7S and SILZKFR8E7S, both spark plugs feature a quick-heating insulator nose.

The electrodes are also state-of-the-art. Both spark plugs come with a two-step centre electrode made of super alloyed iridium just 0.8 mm in diameter. Even at high combustion temperatures, these electrodes will register virtually no wear. On the ground side, a Square Platinum Electrode (SPE) with laser-welded platinum chip guarantees maximum resilience. It has tapered edges for minimum overlap and maximum mixture accessibility. Additionally, both spark plugs come with a directional ground electrode which is welded to the housing, oriented towards the respective thread cut. This measure ensures that the spark plugs’ ground electrodes assume the ideal position in the combustion chamber.

All vehicle applications of the spark plugs can be looked up in NGK’s service information, which is available from NGK distributors.
