NGK Spark Plug Europe remains exclusive spark plug supplier for powerful KTM engines

slashes Press release from 02/25/2015

Ratingen, 25.02.2015 – In 2015, NGK Spark Plug Europe remains exclusive spark plug supplier for high performance engines from the traditional Austrian KTM motorcycle brand. Among others, NGK supplies the OE spark plugs for the dual ignition engines of the Duke 690, the 1290 Super Duke R as well as for the long-distance enduros 1050 Adventure and 1290 Super Adventure.

KTM uses dual ignition to improve the quality of ignition and the engine efficiency of its four-stroke engines. From model year 2012 on, the Duke 690’s one-cylinder engine already featured NGK’s LKAR8BI-9 as central spark plug and the LMAR7A-9, which is installed laterally. With its slim 0.6 mm Iridium tip on the centre electrode, the former ensures optimal mixture accessibility and combustion along a long service interval, as the precious metal protects the electrodes from wear and corrosion. The LMAR7A-9, however, is a standard nickel-type spark plug. Its special feature is its long-reaching thread, which is 26.5 mm long and just 10 mm wide. The slim design is necessary to enable both spark plugs to be fitted in only one cylinder.

A similar winning combination is used for the 1290 Super Duke R: The strongest two-cylinder engine for the bike, which has been available since last year, features an Iridium spark plug from NGK as OE – the LKAR9BI-9. Apart from having a different heat range, it is identical to the central spark plug of the Duke 690. As in the Duke 690, the nickel-type LMAR7A-9 assists the primary plug in lateral mounting position.

Additionally, NGK is supplying KTM with spark plugs for models announced for 2015. Like the Dukes, the new long-distance enduros from KTM, the 1050 Adventure and 1290 Super Adventure, operate with dual ignition. However, these motorbikes come with two Iridium spark plugs installed in each cylinder. The LKAR9BI-10 can be found in central position, the LMAR7DI-10 laterally. Both feature a long-reaching and slim thread and an enlarged electrode gap to further improve combustion quality. Additionally, the ground electrode of the LMAR7DI-10 was designed in “Taper Cut Design”, which means that the ground electrode is shorter and comes with tapered edges.
