The new high temperature ceramic glow plug (NHTC) made NGK Spark Plug the preferred glow plug supplier to the premium car manufacturer. Until 2019, Mercedes-Benz will almost exclusively be using glow plugs from the ignition and sensor specialist for all current and newly developed diesel engines for passenger cars.
As part of the cooperation, NGK also developed the NHTC glow plug, which has now been made available to the Aftermarket. It offers outstanding glowing characteristics. Thanks to its fully ceramic heating element it reaches an operating temperature of about 1,000 °C in less than two seconds. Additionally, it is capable of post-glowing at a constant temperature of approximately 1,350 °C for many minutes. In doing so, it contributes strongly to the reduction of noxious pollutants and carbon-particulate emissions.
The CZ551 (Mercedes Part Nos. A001 159 73 01 and A001 159 80 01; NGK Stock No. 91584) offers huge Aftermarket potential: It is equivalent to the OE glow plug CZ501, which is specified as OE in the inline four-cylinder OM651, the basic engine from Mercedes which has been powering more than 60 of the brand's cars since 2010 in output levels from 100 to 198 kW. Among others, it can be found in the A, B, C and S Class as well as the CLA, CLS, GLA and GLK Class. As a result, the CZ551 has been added to the D-Power range of fast-movers and allocated the D-Power short number 85.
All vehicle applications of the glow plug can be looked up in NGK’s service information, which is available from NGK distributors.
