New Spark Plug for the Aftermarket: Platinum-type for 1.8 and 2.0-litre TFSI from the VW group

slashes Press release from 01/23/2015

Ratingen, 23.01.2015 – With NGK Spark Plug’s PLFER7A8EG, the company is now supplying the trade and workshops with the spark plug which is OE for approximately 20 models from VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda. NGK developed the precious metal-type plug exclusively for the series production of Europe’s largest car manufacturer.

The third generation of the VW group’s bestselling EA888 engine debuted in 2011 under the bonnet of the Audi A5. Today, the TFSI can be found with displacements of 1.8 and 2.0 litres in the group's most popular cars – and with it the PLFER7A8EG from NGK, a double precious metal spark plug with M14 thread, a platinum tip on the centre electrode and a platinum chip on the ground electrode. Due to the high resilience of the precious metal, the spark plug offers highest ignition reliability along the entire service interval. Additionally, the plug’s centre electrode features an extremely slim design to improve engine efficiency.

Instead of an SAE connector, the PLFER7A8EG features a cup-shaped terminal. The contact is established by means of a spring inside this cup. This new connection saves several millimetres of space and allows the ceramic insulator to be lengthened – a measure which, in turn, improves flashover resistance even at high ignition voltages. Furthermore, as the walls of the cup improve the shielding of the spring contact, the new design prevents electrical failure.

The PLFER7A8EG (NGK stock no. 94833, VW part no. 06K905601B) is OE in about 20 cars from the VW group, including the Audi A1 TFSI (2.0 l, 170 kW), A3 TFSI (1.8 l, 132 kW), A5 TFSI (2.0 l, 165 kW) and Q5 TFSI (2.0 l, 165 kW) as well as the Seat Leon 3 TFSI (1.8 l, 132 kW), Seat Leon 3 TSI Cupra (2.0 l, 206 kW), Skoda Octavia 3 TSI (1.8 l, 132 kW) and Octavia 3 TSI RS (2.0 l, 162 kW). Volkswagen uses the PLFER7A8EG – among others – on-board the Golf 7 GTI (2.0 l, 162 kW) and the Golf 7 R 4motion (2.0 l, 221 kW).

All vehicle applications and additional information can be looked up in NGK’s Service Information, which is available from distributors.
